Salvation According to Christianity and Islam

The Quran exhorts Jews and Christians to judge by all the revelation which God had given them:
If they had observed the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto them from their Lord, they would surely have been nourished from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them there are people who are moderate, but many of them are of evil conduct. O Messenger! Make known that which hath been revealed UNTO THEE from thy Lord, for if thou do it not, thou wilt not have conveyed His message. Allah will protect thee from mankind. Lo! Allah guideth not the disbelieving folk. Say O People of the Scripture! Ye have naught (of guidance) till ye observe the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto you from your Lord. That which is revealed UNTO THEE (Muhammad) from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them. But grieve not for the disbelieving folk. S. 5:66-68 Pickthall
The foregoing makes it clear that the revelation which God gave the Jews and Christians doesn’t include the Quran since the verses distinguish between that which was revealed to them with the supposed revelation given to Muhammad. This is brought out more clearly in the following texts:
Say (O Muslims): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed UNTO US and that which was revealed unto Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus received, and that which the prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered. S. 2:136 Pickthall
And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed UNTO US and revealed UNTO YOU; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender. S. 29:46 Pickthall
These texts establish that the Quran is essentially exhorting the Jews and Christians to observe everything contained in the inspired Scriptures which were in their possession. Since the only Scriptures that the Christians possessed were the books of the Holy Bible, which included the 27 books of the New Testament, this means that the Islamic scripture is commanding them to observe whatever is contained in these respective writings.
The Quran even warns Christians to judge by the Gospel that Christ gave to them, since failing to do so would make them no better than rebels and evildoers:
And We sent after (following) on their tracks with Jesus, Mary's son confirming for what (is) between his hands from the Torah/Old Testament, and We gave him the New Testament/Bible in it (is) guidance and light, and confirming to what (is) between his hands from the Torah/Old Testament, and guidance and a sermon/advice/warning to the fearing and obeying. And the New Testament's/Bible's people should judge/rule with what God descended in it, and who does not judge/rule with what God descended, so those, they are the debauchers. S. 5:46-47 Muhammad Ahmed – Samira
In light of this we have decided to go ahead and consult our Scriptures to judge the Quran’s teaching on salvation to see whether it is compatible with the revelations which came before it. If the Quran’s message of salvation doesn’t line up with the proclamation of the Holy Bible then this simply provides further evidence that Muhammad was a false prophet.
According to the Islamic scripture a person is saved on the basis of his faith and righteous deeds:
Allah hath promised those who believe and do good works: Theirs will be forgiveness and immense reward. S. 5:9 Pickthall
But (as for) those who believe and do good works – We tax not any soul beyond its scope – Such are rightful owners of the Garden. They abide therein. S. 7:42 Pickthall
Save those who persevere and do good works. Theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward. S. 11:11 Pickthall
Lo! those who believe and do good works and humble themselves before their Lord: such are rightful owners of the Garden; they will abide therein. S. 11:23 Pickthall
Except those who repent and believe, and work righteousness: for these will enter the Garden and will not be wronged in the least, – Gardens of Eternity, those which (God) Most Gracious has promised to His servants in the Unseen: for His promise must (necessarily) come to pass. They will not there hear any vain discourse, but only salutations of Peace: And they will have therein their sustenance, morning and evening. S. 19:60-62 Y. Ali
But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and believe in the (Revelation) sent down to Muhammad – for it is the Truth from their Lord, – He will remove from them their ills and improve their condition. S. 47:2 Y. Ali
The Quran further teaches that a person’s good deeds remove and atone for sins:
If ye make your alms to appear, it is well; but if ye conceal them, and give them unto the poor, this [will be] better for you, and will atone for your sins: And God is well informed of that which ye do. S. 2:271 Sale
And keep up prayer in the two parts of the day and in the first hours of the night; surely good deeds take away evil deeds this is a reminder to the mindful. S. 11:114 Shakir
However, all of this contradicts the very Scriptures which the Quran exhorts Christians to follow and judge by.
The Holy Bible teaches that a person is saved by the grace and mercy of God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and not on the basis of righteous deeds:
“Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” John 20:30-31
“Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.” Acts 13:38-39
“and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.”” Acts 15:9-11
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10
“nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.” Galatians 2:16
“It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:15-16
“For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His gracewe would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:3-7
“And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:11-13
Christ himself taught that a person is not saved by observing the Mosaic Law, but by loving and believing in him:
“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.” Matthew 10:37-39
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.’” Matthew 16:24-27
“And someone came to Him and said, ‘Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?’ And He said to him, ‘Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ Then he said to Him, ‘Which ones?’ And Jesus said, ‘You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The young man said to Him, ‘All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, FOLLOW ME.’ But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property… Then Peter said to Him, ‘Behold, we have left everything AND FOLLOWED YOU; what then will there be for us?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms FOR MY NAME’S SAKE, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.’” Matthew 19:16-22, 27-30
“Now He said to them, ‘These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed IN HIS NAME to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’” Luke 24:44-47
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:14-18
“‘Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.’ Therefore they said to Him, ‘What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?’ Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.’…  Jesus then said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.’ Then they said to Him, ‘Lord, always give us this bread.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day... Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.’” John 6:27-29, 32-40, 47
“‘Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.’ Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.’” John 14:1-7
to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among thosewho have been sanctified by faith in Me.” Acts 26:18
The inspired Scriptures also proclaim that atonement is based on the vicarious sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ, since there can be no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood:
“And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for IT IS THE BLOOD by reason of the life THAT MAKES ATONEMENT.’” Leviticus 17:10-11
“just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28 – cf. Mark 10:45
“While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body.’ And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.’” Matthew 26:26-28 – cf. Mark 14:22-24
“This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” John 6:50-51
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” Acts 20:28
“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be justand the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.” Romans 3:20-28 New International Version (NIV)
“to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace” Ephesians 1:6-7
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.” Ephesians 5:1-2
“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—” Colossians 1:13-22
“And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the holy place year by year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comesjudgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” Hebrews 9:22-28
“knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” 1 Peter 1:18-19
“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:21-25
“but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1-2 NIV
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10 NIV
“and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 1:5-6
“When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made themto be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.’” Revelation 5:8-10
“After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne AND BEFORE THE LAMB, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, AND TO THE LAMB.’ And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.’ Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, ‘These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?’ I said to him, ‘My lord, you know.’ And he said to me, ‘These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white IN THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB. FOR THIS REASON, they are before the throne of God; and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. They will hunger no longer, nor thirst anymore; nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any heat; for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes.’” Revelation 7:9-17
With the foregoing in perspective, it is clear that Muhammad contradicted the message of salvation as taught in the Holy Bible, which is the same revelation that he himself commanded Jews and Christians to judge and go by. As such, Muhammad stands condemned as a false prophet and antichrist which the inspired Scriptures warned us of:
Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:15-20
“For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin. But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purityof devotion to Christ. For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully… For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.” 2 Corinthians 11:2-4, 13-15
“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!” Galatians 1:8-9
“Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.” 1 John 2:22-23
“For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.” 2 John 1:7-11

Christ’s Role as Judge in Light of Islamic Theology

According to Muslim teaching, some of Allah’s names include titles such as “the Just,” “the Judge,” “the Just Decider,” and “The Requitter/Recompenser.”
Al'Adl,  Al-'Âdil: The Just
The Just and Equitable. He whom desire does not cause to incline or decline so that He should deviate from the right course in judgement.
Al-'Adl is one of the Ninety-Nine Names…
Al-Hakam: The Judge
The Arbiter, Allah judges and there is no reversing His judgement.
Al-Hakam is one of the Ninety-Nine Names…
Al-Fattâh, Al-Fâtih: The Just Decider, The Opener
The Judge, the Conquerer, who opens what is closed between the two adversaries, i.e. decides between them. Also opening His goodness and mercy, the One who gives victory.
Al-Fattah is one of the Ninety-Nine Names…
Ad-Dayyân: The Requiter
The Judge, one who demands the accounts, retribution. He does not neglect any deed, but requites it properly.
The Prophet said, "Allah will collect His slaves and He will call to them in a voice that those who are far away will hear just as clearly as those who are close at hand: 'I am the King, the Requiter!'" (Al-Bukhari) (Aisha Bewley, The Divine Names)
The Quran itself testifies that there is no other judge besides Allah,
Shall I seek other than Allah for judge, when He it is Who hath revealed unto you (this) Scripture, fully explained? Those unto whom We gave the Scripture (aforetime) know that it is revealed from thy Lord in truth. So be not thou (O Muhammad) of the waverers. S. 6:114 Pickthall
And also proclaims that judgment belongs entirely and solely to him:
That is because when Allah alone was called upon, you disbelieved, and when associates were given to Him, you believed; so judgment belongs to Allah, the High, the Great. S. 40:12 Shakir
This is why the Quran says that Allah will come to judge creation:
Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? S. 89:21-23 Hilali-Khan
In light of such assertions, the last thing we would expect is for Christ and his followers to ascribe such titles and functions to the Lord Jesus. After all, if the Quran were correct that Jesus and his disciples were Muslims then they would never have ascribed such divine characteristics to Christ, since to do so would go against Islamic monotheism. Yet if they did attribute these unique roles to the risen Lord then this proves that both Christ and his Apostles went around proclaiming that Jesus is God in the flesh (even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit), thereby proving that Islam is false.
Lo and behold, the inspired Christian Scriptures proclaim that this is precisely what the first Christians did!
For instance, the Holy Bible teaches that Christ is the Just One, in fact the Holy One:
“But you denied the Holy One and the Just (ton hagion kai dikaion), and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.” Acts 3:14-15 NKJV
“Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One (ho dikaios), of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers,” Acts 7:52 New King James Version (NKJV)
“Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One (ton dikaion), and hear the voice of His mouth.’” Acts 22:14 NKJV
“Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, ‘What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God (ho hagios tou theou)!’” Mark 1:23-24
Interestingly, the Holy One happens to be another one of Allah’s names,
5. Al-Quddus
The Most Holy (Gibril F. Haddad, Allah's Names and Attributes)
As the Quran itself testifies:
He is Allah, than Whom there is no other God, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One (al-quddoosu), Peace, the Keeper of Faith, the Guardian, the Majestic, the Compeller, the Superb. Glorified be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him). S. 59:23 Pickthall
All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One (al-quddoosi), the Mighty, the Wise. S. 62:1 Pickthall
The NT also states that all judgment has been given to the Son, who will come on the last day to resurrect the dead and judge the entire earth:
But when the Son of Man comes in HIS glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on HIS glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before HIM; and HE will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on HIS right, and the goats on the left. Then the Kingwill say to those on HIS right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of MY Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’… Then He will also say to those on HIS left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;’… These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46
“The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)… And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.” Acts 10:36, 42
“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that allpeople everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” Acts 17:30-31
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.” 2 Corinthians 5:10-11
“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by HIS appearing and HIS kingdom… in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing… The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safelyto HIS heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.” 2 Timothy 4:1, 8, 18
“For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear THE VOICE OF THE SON OF GOD, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear HIS VOICE, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.” John 5:21-29
Amazingly, in the above passage from John, Christ claims to do the very thing which the Muslim scripture says Allah shall do, namely, raise the dead from their graves or tombs:
That is because Allah, He is the Truth, and it is He Who gives life to the dead, and it is He Who is Able to do all things. And surely, the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it, and certainly, Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves. S. 22:6-7 Hilali-Khan
The Holy Bible further teaches that it is Christ who shall repay every man according to his/her deeds:
For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, andwill then repay every man according to his deeds.” Matthew 16:27
“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this: ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first… And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will knowthat I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.’” Revelation 2:18-19, 23
“‘Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.’… He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.” Revelation 22:12-13, 16, 20-21
In these texts, Jesus not only claims to be the One who will reward everyone for what they have earned, he even ascribes to himself the very titles, roles and characteristics of God Almighty, just as the following verses show:
“‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” Revelation 1:8
“Then He said to me, ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost. He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.’” Revelation 21:6-7
Behold, the Lord God will come with might, With His arm ruling for Him. Behold, His reward is with Him And His recompense before Him. Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, In His arm He will gather the lambs And carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.” Isaiah 40:10-11
“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.’” Isaiah 44:6 – cf. 41:4; 48:12
“I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.” Jeremiah 17:10
It is Yahweh who knows the hearts and minds and who comes to recompense people for what they have done. Yahweh is also the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end, titles which Jesus applies to himself!
Even the Quran testifies that first and the last is one of the names of Allah:
Al-Awwal, Al-Akhir: The First and the Last
Al-Akhir is He who remains after all His creatures have perished.
Al-Awwal is the First, preceding all others.
Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir are two of the Ninety-Nine Names. (Bewley, The Divine Names)
He is the First and the Last, and the Outward and the Inward; and He is Knower of all things. S. 57:3 Pickthall
In the hadith Muhammad explained what this title meant:
Suhail reported that Abu Salih used to command us (in these words): When any one of you intends to go to sleep, he should lie on the bed on his right side and then say: "O Allah, the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord, and the Lord of everything, the Splitter of the grain of corn and the datestone (or fruit kernal), the Revealer of Torah and Injil (Bible) and Criterion (the Holy Qur'an), I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of everything Thou art to sieze by the forelock (Thou hast perfect control over it). O Allah, Thou art the First, there is naught before Thee, and Thou art the Last and there is naught after Thee, and Thou art Evident and there is nothing above Thee, and Thou art Innermost and there is nothing beyond Thee. Remove the burden of debt from us and relieve us from want." Abu Salih used to narrate it from Abu Huraira who narrated it from Allah's Apostle. (Sahih Muslim, Book 035,Number 6551)
Now contrast this with the following passage:
“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; AND I WAS DEAD, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.’” Revelation 1:17-18 – cf. 2:8
By claiming to be the First and Last who died and came back to life, Christ was basically affirming his eternal, uncreated existence, since there was nothing before him nor shall there be anything after him.
To top it all off, the ahadith report that Muhammad told his followers that Jesus would return from heaven to reign on earth as a just ruler and fair judge:
(And he shall be a sign for (the coming of) the Hour.) means, sign and “One of the signs of the Hour will be the appearance of `Isa son of Maryam before the Day of Resurrection.” Something similar was also narrated from Abu Hurayrah, Ibn `Abbas, `Abu Al-`Aliyah, Abu Malik, `Ikrimah, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, Ad-Dahhak and others. Many Mutawatir Hadiths report that the Messenger of Allah said that `Isa will descend before the Day of Resurrection as a just ruler and fair judge. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir,Q. 43:61)
Hence, Muhammad ascribes to Jesus two of the names and roles of Allah, namely “just” and “judge,” despite the Quran’s emphatic proclamation that Allah does not have any partner in his judgment or rule:
And say: (All) praise is due to Allah, Who has not taken a son and Who has not a partner in the kingdom, and Who has not a helper to save Him from disgrace; and proclaim His greatness magnifying (Him). S. 17:111 Shakir
Say: Allah knows best how long they remained; to Him are (known) the unseen things of the heavens and the earth; how clear His sight and how clear His hearing! There is none to be a guardian for them besides Him, and He does not make any one His associate in His Judgment. S. 18:26 Shakir
In light of the foregoing, it is clear that neither Jesus nor his disciples were Muslims since they ascribed to Christ certain roles and titles which serve to identify the risen Lord as Yahweh God Almighty who became flesh for our salvation. Therefore, Muhammad was nothing more than a false prophet and the Quran is a book of misguidance.

The Worship of Jesus in Light of Islamic Theology

Muhammad is reported to have taught that invocation or supplication is the very essence of worship:
1342. Narrated An-Nu’man bin Bashir: The Prophet said, “Verily supplication is worship.” [Reported by al-Arba’a and At-Tirmidhi graded it Sahih (sound)].
Narrated Anas: (Allah’s Messenger said) “Supplication is the pith of worship.” [Reported by At-Tirmidhi with a full chain of narrators].
Narrated Abu Huraira: (Allah’s Messenger said) “Nothing is more honourable before Allah than supplication.” [At-Tirmidhi reported it with a full chain of narrators. Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim graded it Sahih (sound)]. (Bulugh Al-Maram: Attainment of the Objective according to Evidence of the Ordinances, Compiled by Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani with Brief Notes from the Book Subul-us-Salam, written by Muhammad bin Ismail As-Sanani [Dar-us-Salam Publications, Riyadh-Saudi Arabia, first edition 1996], 16. The Comprehensive Book, Chapter 6. Remembrance of Allah and supplications, pp. 540-541)
Since Islam allegedly teaches that all acts of worship must be directed to God alone this means that no one who is truly a Muslim will ever invoke anyone other than Allah.(1) And seeing that the Quran claims that Christ and his followers were all Muslims who called to the worship of Allah (cf. Q. 3:51; 5:72, 111), they would also have never supplicated any other person besides God. Moreover, if they didn’t believe that Jesus is God in the flesh then they would never dare to invoke him in their prayers since this would be idolatrous.
On the other hand, if Christ and his disciples did believe and proclaim that Jesus is God in the flesh then we wouldn’t be surprised to find prayers and invocations being offered to the risen Lord.
So what do the NT documents teach? Do they present Jesus and the Apostles as devout Muslims who directed all their religious devotion to God the Father? Or did Christ’s disciples offer praise and adoration along with supplications to their risen Lord and Savior? Let us turn to the Christian Scriptures to find out.
Unfortunately for the Muslims, the Holy Bible proclaims that the Lord Jesus actually told his disciples that they could address their invocations directly to him right after he returns to the Father in glory, assuring them that he would personally answer all their requests:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask ME anything in My name, I will do it.” John 14:12-14
“Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was… for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.” John 17:5, 8, 10-11, 13
This explains why the NT documents are filled with examples of people praying to the risen Lord.
For instance, the Apostle John reminded believers of their confidence in the fact that the Son of God hears and answers every invocation offered to him that is in line with his will:
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of THE SON OF GOD, so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence which we have before HIM, that, if we ask anything according to HIS will, HE hears us. And if we know that HE hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked FROM HIM.” 1 John 5:13-15
Another example would be the first Christian martyr Stephen, who made the following invocation just as he was about to die:
“They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit! Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them!’ Having said this, he fell asleep.” Acts 7:59-60
Astonishingly, Stephen prayed to the Lord Jesus in the same way that the OT saints would pray to Yahweh:
Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth.” Psalm 31:5
This blessed martyr even ascribed to Jesus the power to forgive sins which is a prerogative belonging to God alone, as both the Holy Bible and the Islamic sources affirm:
“And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’ But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, ‘Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone? Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, ‘Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven”; or to say, “Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk”? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—He said to the paralytic, ‘I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.’ And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this.’” Mark 2:5-12
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession? He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in unchanging love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. Yes, You will cast all their sins Into the depths of the sea.” Micah 7:18-19 – cf. 1 Kings 8:39, 46-50; Psalm 130:3-4, 7-8; Isaiah 43:25; Daniel 9:9
Now contrast this with the following Islamic references:
And those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their own souls, earnestly bring God to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins, – and who can forgive sins except God? – and are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done. S. 3:135 Y. Ali
1347. Narrated Shaddad bin Aus: Allah’s Messenger said, “The best manners of asking for forgiveness is to say: ‘O Allah, You are Rabb. There is no God but You. You have created me, and I am Your slave and hold to Your covenant and promises as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour on me, and I acknowledge my sins. forgives [sic] me, BECAUSE NONE FORGIVES SINS EXCEPT YOU.” (Ibn Hagar, Bulugh Al-Maram, p. 542; capital and italic emphasis ours)
Paul was another true believer who, not only spoke to the risen Lord Jesus in prayer,
“‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on HIS NAME.’ It happened when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I fell into a trance, and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony ABOUT ME. And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves understand that in one synagogue after another I used to imprison and beat those who believed IN YOU. And when the blood of YOUR witnessStephen was being shed, I also was standing by approving, and watching out for the coats of those who were slaying him.’ And He said to me, ‘Go! For I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’” Acts 22:16-21
But also supplicated him for help,
“Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three timesthat it might leave me. And He has said to me, ‘MY GRACE is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that THE POWER OF CHRIST may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
And thanked the Lord Jesus for saving and strengthening him:
I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all. Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.” 1 Timothy 1:12-16
In fact, the first Christians were characterized by their practicing of calling upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, a practice which started among Jewish believers in Jerusalem:
“Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, ‘Ananias.’ And he said, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.’ But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did TO YOUR SAINTS AT JERUSALEM; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on YOUR NAME.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen instrument OF MINE, to bear MY NAME before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for MY NAME’S SAKE.’ So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, ‘Brother Saul, THE LORD JESUS, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming,HAS SENT ME so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; and he took food and was strengthened. Now for several days he was with the disciples who were at Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, ‘He is the Son of God.’ All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, ‘Is this not he who IN JERUSALEM destroyed those who CALLED ON THIS NAME, and who had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?’ But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding the Jews who lived at Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the Christ.” Acts 9:10-17, 21
“To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:” 1 Corinthians 1:2
To say that this is astonishing would be a wild understatement, especially when we keep in mind the fact that the Hebrew Scriptures proclaim that true believers are those who call upon the name of Yahweh God:
“Exalt the Lord our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He. Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called on His name; They called upon the Lord and He answered them. He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; They kept His testimonies And the statute that He gave them.” Psalm 99:5-7
“I love the Lord, because He hears My voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, Therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live. The cords of death encompassed me And the terrors of Sheol came upon me; I found distress and sorrow. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: ‘O Lord, I beseech You, save my life!’… I shall lift up the cup of salvation And call upon the name of the Lord… To You I shall offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving, And call upon the name of the Lord.” Psalm 116:1-4, 13, 17 – cf. 145:18; Genesis 4:26; 12:8; 21:33; Deuteronomy 4:7; Jeremiah 29:13; Joel 2:32
The first believers would also call out to the Lord Jesus beseeching him to come again:
“If anyone does not love the Lord, a curse be on him. Marana tha that is, Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.” 1 Corinthians 16:22-23 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
“He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.” Revelation 22:20-21
Marana tha (Lord, come!) is an Aramaic expression, indicating that the practice of invoking the risen Lord to return started among the Aramaic speaking Jews and was then passed on to Greek speaking believers.
These specific texts further demonstrate that Christ’s disciples would petition the Lord Jesus to bestow his spiritual blessings upon all the faithful. Here are a few more examples:
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.” Galatians 6:18
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Philippians 4:23
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:28
“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.” 2 Thessalonians 3:18
The first Christians would even do this by invoking the risen Lord along with God the Father:
“Grace to you and peace FROM God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1:3
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen.” Galatians 1:3-5
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus andwho are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 1:1-2
“Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptiblelove.” Ephesians 6:23-24
“Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:1-2
“Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians IN God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God the Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:1-2
“To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father AND Christ Jesus our Lord.” 1 Timothy 1:2
“To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father AND Christ Jesus our Lord.” 2 Timothy 1:2
“Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father AND FROM Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.” 2 John 1:3
These supplications to God the Father and the Lord Jesus reveal the early Church’s belief in the essential coequality of the Father and the Son. It highlights the fact that the first Christians believed that the risen Lord was(is) omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, since these are the qualities which he must possess in order to be able to lavish his love, peace, blessing and grace upon all believers everywhere.
With the foregoing in perspective, it is quite evident that Jesus’ followers worshiped Christ as their risen Lord, and made their petitions and requests known to him through prayer. This proves that neither Christ nor his disciples were Muslims since the practice of calling upon and invoking the name of the risen Lord by the first Christian communities expressly violates Islam’s denial that Jesus is God in the flesh, and therefore unworthy of such worship.
So much for the Muslim claim that Jesus and his disciples were Muslims who preached the same Islamic message that Muhammad did.

Endnotes
(1) Ironically, despite his claim that invocation is worship Muhammad actually allowed, and even taught, his followers to invoke him directly along with Allah so as to make sure that they get what they ask for:
3578. ‘Uthman bin Hunaif narrated that a blind man came to the Prophet and said to him: “Supplicate to Allah to heal me.” He said: “If you wish, I will supplicate for you, and if you wish, you can be patient, for that is better for you.” He said: “Then supplicate to him.” He said: “So he ordered him to perform Wudu’ and to make his Wudu’ complete, and to supplicate with this supplication: ‘O Allah, I ask You and turn towards You by Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy. Indeed, I have turned to my Lord, BY MEANS OF YOU, concerning this need of mine, so that it can be resolved, So Allah so accept HIS INTERCESSION for me (Allahumma Inni As’aluka WA MUHAMMADIN Nabi-Ir-Rahmati Tawajjahtu Bika Ila Rabbi Fi Hajati Hadhihi Lituqda Li, Allahumma Fashaffi‘hu Fiya).’” (SAHIH)
[He said]: This Hadith is Hasan SAHIH Gharib, we do not know of it except through this route, as a narration of Abu Ja‘far, and he is someone other than Al-Khatmi, [and Uthman bin Hunaif is the brother of Sahl bin Hunaif] (English Translation of Jami‘ At-Tirmidhi: Compiled by Imam Hafiz Abu ‘Eisa Mohammad Ibn ‘Eisa At-Tirmidhi, translated by Abu Khaliyl (USA), ahadith edited and referenced by Hafiz Tahir Zubair ‘Ali Za’i [Darussalam Publishers & Distributors, First Edition: November 2007], Volume 6, From Hadith No. 3291 to 3956, Various Narrations On The Chapters Of Supplications, Chapter 118, p. 283; capital and underline emphasis ours)
And here is a slightly different version of this same report:
1385. It was narrated from ‘Uthman bin Hunaif that a blind man came to the Prophet and said to him: “Pray to Allah to heal me.” He said: “If you wish to store your reward for the Hereafter, that is better, or if you wish, I will supplicate for you.” He said: “Supplicate.” He said: “So he told him to perform ablution and do it well, and to pray two Rak’ah, and to say this supplication: “Allahumma inni as’aluka wa atawajjahu ilaika BI-MUHAMMADIN NABIYYIR-RAHMA.YA MUHAMMADU inni qad tawajjahtu bika ila rabbi fi hajati hadhihi Lituqda. Allahumma fashaffi‘hu fiya (O Allah, I ask of You and I turn my face towards You BY VIRTUE OF THE INTERCESSION OF MUHAMMAD THE PROPHET OF MERCY. O MUHAMMAD, I have turned to my Lord BY VIRTUE OF YOUR INTERCESSION concerning this need of mine, so that it may be met. O Allah, accept HIS INTERCESSION concerning me)”. (SAHIH) (English Translation of Sunan Ibn Majah: Compiled by Imam Muhammad Bin Yazeed Ibn Majah Al-Qazwini, Ahadith edited and referenced by Hafiz Abu Tahir Zubair 'Ali Za'i, translated by Nasiruddin al-Khattab (Canada), final review by Abu Khaliyl (USA) [Darussalam Publications and Distributors, First Edition: June 2007], Volume 2,  From Hadith no. 803 to 1782, 5. The Chapters Of Establishing The Prayer And The Sunnah Regarding Them, Chapter 189. What Was Narrated Concerning Prayer At Times Of Need, pp. 329-330; capital and underline emphasis ours)
This poses a serious problem since the Quran and ahadith testify that Muhammad was nothing more than an imperfect, fallible mortal who was in desperate need of forgiveness and salvation:
“"Or you have a house of adornable materials (like silver and pure gold, etc.), or you ascend up into the sky, and even then we will put no faith in your ascension until you bring down for us a Book that we would read." Say (O Muhammad): "Glorified (and Exalted) be my Lord (Allah) above all that evil they (polytheists) associate with Him! Am I anything but a man, sent as a Messenger?"” S. 17:93 Hilali-Khan
Say: I am only a mortal like you. My Lord inspireth in me that your God is only One God. And whoever hopeth for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work, and make none sharer of the worship due unto his Lord. S. 18:110 Pickthall
Verily, you (O Muhammad) will die and verily, they (too) will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord. S. 39:30-31 Hilali-Khan
Say (O Muhammad):"I am not a new thing among the Messengers (of Allah) (i.e. I am not the first Messenger) nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am but a plain warner." S. 46:9 Hilali-Khan
1354. Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari: The Prophet used to supplicate: “O Allah, forgive me my sin, my ignorance, my extravagance in my affairs, and what You know better than I do. O Allah, forgive me my serious and my frivolous sins, my unintentional and my intentional sins, FOR I AM GUILTY OF ALL THAT. O Allah, forgive me my former and my latter sins, what I have kept secret and what I have done openly, and what You know better than I do. You are the Advancer, You are the Delayer, and You are the Omnipotent.” [Agreed Upon]. (Ibn Hajar, Bulugh Al-Maram, p. 545; capital and underline emphasis ours)
As such, Muhammad was guilty of causing his followers to commit idolatry by taking him as an object of worship, which is the unforgiveable sin of shirk (cf. Q. 2:22; 4:48, 116; 6:83-88; 39:65).
