In these posts I am going to again employ the Quran and Islamic traditions to prove that Jesus is God. I will do so here by highlighting what the Islamic corpus teaches in respect to the fallen nature of man and the essential purity of the Lord Jesus.
The Islamic Position On the Universal Sinfulness of Mankind
The Quran plainly teaches that humans are basically fools who
fail to obey their lord:
Man is foolish and fails to do what is commanded.
“We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains;
but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof: but man undertook it;-
He was indeed unjust and foolish;-” S. 33:72 Shakir
By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. S.
80:23 Shakir
Man is also said to have been created for distress, and is
described as being impatient and stingy by nature:
Verily, man is created impatient and miserly.
When evil touches him, he is full of lamentations, But when good falls to his
lot, he is niggardly, Except those who pray, Those who are constant in their
Prayer; And those in whose wealth there is a known right– S. 70:19-24 Sher Ali
And man prays for evil as he ought to pray for good, and man is ever hasty.
S. 17:11 Shakir
Certainly We have created man to be in distress. S. 90:4 Shakir
Moreover, human beings are depicted as being weak, unjust and ungrateful,
whose lust for wealth is extremely great:
God doth wish to lighten your (difficulties): For man was created Weak (in
flesh). S. 4:28 Y. Ali
And He giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the
favours of God, never will ye be able to number them. Verily, man is given up to
injustice and ingratitude. S. 14:34 Y. Ali
May man be killed (qutila)! how ungrateful he is! S.
80:17 Palmer
Lo! man
is an ingrate unto his Lord And lo! he is a witness unto
that; And lo! in
the love of wealth he is violent. S. 100:6-8 Pickthall
The Muslim scripture and traditions attributed to Muhammad
further teach that the human soul is wickedly evil, because Allah made it such,
and therefore is lost. This is why man is exhorted to strive to make and keep
himself pure by believing and doing good deeds:
“Nor do I absolve my own self (of blame): the (human) soul is certainly
prone to evil, unless my Lord do bestow His Mercy: but surely
my Lord is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.” S. 12:53
By a Soul and Him who balanced it, And breathed into it its
wickedness and its piety, Blessed now is he who hath
kept it pure, S. 91:7-9 Rodwell
Abu al-Aswad reported that ‘Imran b Husain asked him: What is
your view, what the people do today in the world, and strive for, is it
something decreed for them or preordained for them or will their fate in the
Hereafter be determined by the fact that their Prophets brought them teaching
which they did not act upon? I said: Of course, IT IS SOMETHING WHICH IS
PREDETERMINED FOR THEM AND PREORDAINED FOR THEM. He (further)
said: Then, would it not be an injustice (to punish them)? I felt greatly
disturbed because of that, and said: Everything is created by Allah and lies in
His Power. He would not be questioned as to what He does, but they would be questioned;
thereupon he said to me: May Allah have mercy upon you, I did not mean to ask
you but for testing your intelligence. Two men of the tribe of Muzaina came to
Allah’s Messenger and said: Allah’s Messenger, what is your opinion that the
people do in the world and strive for, is something decreed for them; something
preordained for them and will their fate in the Hereafter be determined by the
fact that their Prophets brought them teachings which they did not act upon,
and thus they became deserving of punishment? Thereupon, he said: Of course, it
happens AS IT
IS DECREED BY DESTINY AND PREORDAINED FOR THEM, and this view is confirmed by
this verse of the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious: “Consider the soul
and Him Who made it perfect, THEN BREATHED INTO ITS SIN and its piety” (xci. 8).
(Sahih Muslim,
Book 033, Number 6406 https://sunnah.com/muslim/46/17)
Verily Man is in loss, Except such as
have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching
of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy. S. 103:2-3 Y. Ali
The foregoing helps us understand the Quranic claim that if
Allah were to punish humans for their wrongdoing then he would have no choice
but to destroy every creature on earth:
If God were to punish men for their wrong-doing, He would not leave, on the
(earth), a single living creature: but He gives them respite
for a stated Term: When their Term expires, they would not be able to delay
(the punishment) for a single hour, just as they would not be able to
anticipate it (for a single hour). S. 16:61 Y. Ali
If God were to punish men according to what they deserve. He would not leave on the back of
the (earth) a single living creature: but He gives them respite
for a stated Term: when their Term expires, verily God has in His sight all His
Servants. S. 35:45 Y. Ali
What About Muhammad?
Since the Muslim scripture acknowledges the universal depravity
of all creatures, it should therefore come as no surprise that Muhammad is
described as a lost sinner,
Surely, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad) the Book (this
Qur’an) in truth that you might judge between men by that which Allah has shown
you (i.e. has taught you through Divine Inspiration), so be not a pleader for
the treacherous. And SEEK the
Forgiveness of Allah, certainly, Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving,
Most Merciful. And argue not on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Verily,
Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer of his trust, and indulges in
crime. S. 4:105-107 Hilali-Khan
We narrate unto thee (Muhammad) the best of narratives in that
We have inspired in thee this Qur’an, though aforetime thou wast of the heedless.
S. 12:3 Pickthall
Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is
true. And ASK forgiveness
of thy sin, and hymn the praise of thy Lord at fall of night
and in the early hours. S. 40:55 Pickthall
So know (O Muhammad) that La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the
right to be worshipped but Allah) and ASK forgiveness
for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.
And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest (in your homes).
S. 47:19 Hilali-Khan
Did He not find thee erring (dallan), and
guide thee? S. 93:7 Arberry
When comes the Help of Allah (to you, O Muhammad against your
enemies) and the conquest (of Makkah), And you see that the people enter
Allah’s religion (Islam) in crowds, So glorify the Praises of your Lord, and ask for His Forgiveness.
Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and forgives. S. 110:1-3
Hilali-Khan
Whose god often threatened him with harsh punishment and even
death, if he didn’t get his act together:
Allah forgive thee (O Muhammad)! Wherefor
didst thou grant them leave ere those who told the truth were manifest to thee
and thou didst know the liars? S. 9:43 Pickthall
And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who
look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or
change it. Say
(O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I
only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an
awful Day. S. 10:15 Pickthall
And surely they had purposed to turn you away from that which We
have revealed to you, that you should forge against Us other than that, and
then they would certainly have taken you for a friend. And had it not been that
We had already established you, you
would certainly have been near to incline to them a little; In that case We
would certainly have made you to taste a double (punishment) in this life and a
double (punishment) after death, then you would not have found any helper
against Us. S. 17:73-75 Shakir
That this is verily the word of an honoured apostle; It is not
the word of a poet: little it is ye believe! Nor is it the word of a
soothsayer: little admonition it is ye receive. (This is) a Message sent down
from the Lord of the Worlds. And
if the apostle were to invent any sayings in Our name, We should certainly
seize him by his right hand, And We should certainly then cut off the artery of
his heart: S. 69:40-46 Y. Ali
In fact, not only was Muhammad warned from worshiping other
gods,
This is (part) of that wisdom wherewith thy Lord hath inspired
thee (O Muhammad). And
set not up with Allah any other god, lest thou be cast into hell, reproved,
abandoned. S. 17:39 Pickthall
And certainly, it has been revealed to you and to
those before you: Surely if you associate (with Allah), your work would
certainly come to naught and you would certainly be of the losers. S. 39:65
Shakir
And scolded for inclining his heart to the wealthy nobles of the
Arabs while turning away or frowning upon the poor, the misfortunate like the
blind, and/or the marginalized:
And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord at
morning and evening desiring His countenance; nothing of their account falls
upon thee, and nothing of thy account falls upon them, that thou shouldst drive
them away, and so become one of the evildoers. S. 6:52 Arberry
And restrain thyself with those who call upon their Lord at
morning and evening, desiring His countenance, and let not thine eyes turn away
from them, desiring the adornment of the present life; and obey
not him whose heart We have made neglectful of Our remembrance so that he
follows his own lust, and his affair has become all excess. S. 18:28 Arberry
Stretch not thine eyes to that We have given pairs of them to
enjoy – the flower of the present life, that We may try them
therein and thy Lord’s provision is better, and more enduring. S. 20:131 Arberry
He frowned and turned (his) back, Because there came to him the
blind man. And what would make you know that he would purify himself, Or
become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? As for him who
considers himself free from need (of you), To him do you address yourself. And
no blame is on you if he would not purify himself And as to him who comes to
you striving hard, And he fears, From
him will you divert yourself. S. 80:1-10 Shakir
He was even chided for having doubts concerning the so-called
revelations, being threatened that he would be among the losers if he didn’t
stop doubting:
And if thou (Muhammad) art in doubt concerning that which We
reveal unto thee, then question those who read the Scripture (that was) before
thee. Verily the Truth from thy Lord hath come unto thee. So be not thou of the
waverers. And be
not thou of those who deny the revelations of Allah, for then wert thou of the
losers. S. 10:94-95 Pickthall
In light of the above, could the Islamic sources be any clearer
that there isn’t a single creature that is absolutely sinless and morally
perfect, not even Muhammad?
With that said we are now read to proceed to the second part of
my discussion https://answeringislamblog.wordpress.com/2019/01/08/even-more-proof-from-the-quran-that-jesus-is-god-incarnate-pt-2/.
