Original Forgiveness – Did Original Sin Really End with Adam? Pt. 2

Refuting Another Muslim Lie

We resume our analysis of the issue of the Islamic position concerning Adam’s sin and its effects upon mankind https://answeringislamblog.wordpress.com/2018/11/19/original-forgiveness-did-original-sin-really-end-with-adam-pt-1/.

THE AHADITH

Recall that in the first of our reply we had cited the following quotation from renowned Muslim expositor Ibn Kathir:

This Ayah mentions the great honor that Allah granted Adam, and Allah reminded Adam’s offspring of this fact. Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam, as this Ayah and many Hadiths testify, such as the Hadith about the intercession that we discussed. There is a Hadith about the supplication of Musa, “O my Lord! Show me Adam who caused us and himself to be thrown out of Paradise.” When Musa met Adam, he said to him, “Are you Adam whom Allah created with His Own Hands, blew life into and commanded the angels to prostrate before?” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged) (Surat Al-Fatihah to Verse 252 of Surat Al-Baqarah), abridged by a group of scholars under the supervision of Shaykh Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri [Darussalam Publishers & Distributors, Riyadh, Houston, New York, Lahore; First Edition: January 2000], Parts 1 and 2, Volume 1, p. 193; bold and underline emphasis ours)

This narration of Adam and Moses confronting each other over Adam’s responsibility in causing all of his offspring to be expelled from Paradise is found in all the major works of hadith, just as the following examples show.

AL-BUKHARI

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “Adam and Moses met, and Moses said to Adam “You are the one who made people MISERABLE and turned them out of Paradise.” Adam said to him, “You are the one whom Allah selected for His message and whom He selected for Himself and upon whom He revealed the Torah.” Moses said, ‘Yes.’ Adam said, “Did you find that written in my fate before my creation?‘ Moses said, ‘Yes.’ So Adam overcame Moses with this argument.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 260: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=60&translator=1&start=0&number=260; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Moses argued with Adam and said to him (Adam), ‘You are the one who got the people out of Paradise BY YOUR SIN, AND THUS MADE THEM MISERABLE.’ Adam replied, ‘O Moses! You are the one whom Allah selected for His Message and for His direct talk. Yet you blame me for a thing which Allah had ordained for me before He created me?’” Allah’s Apostle further said, “So Adam overcame Moses by this Argument.” (Volume 6, Book 60, Number 262; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

MUSLIM

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: There was argument between Adam and Moses. Moses said to Adam: You are our father. YOU DID US HARM AND CAUSED US to get out of Paradise. Adam said to him: You are Moses. Allah selected you (for direct conversation with you) and wrote with His own Hand the Book (Torah) for you. Despite this you blame me for an act which Allah had ordained for me forty years before He created me. Allah’s Apostle said: This is how Adam came the better of Moses and Adam came the better of Moses. (Book 033, Number 6409: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=033&translator=2&start=0&number=6409; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: There was argument between Adam and Moses, and Adam came the better of Moses. Moses said to him: You are the same Adam WHO MISLED PEOPLE, and caused them to get out of Paradise. Adam said: You are the same (Moses) whom Allah endowed the knowledge of everything and selected him amongst the people as His Messenger. He said: Yes. Adam then again said: Even then you blame me for an affair which had been ordained for me before I was created. (Book 033, Number 6410; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: There was an argument between Adam and Moses in the presence of their Lord. Adam came the better of Moses. Moses said: Are you that Adam whom Allah created with His Hand and breathed into him His sprit, and commanded angels to fall in prostration before him and He made you live in Paradise with comfort and ease. Then YOU CAUSED the people to get down to the earth because of YOUR LAPSE. Adam said: Are you that Moses whom Allah selected for His Messengership and for His conversation with him and conferred upon you the tablets, in which everything was clearly explained and granted you the audience in order to have confidential talk with you. What is your opinion, how long Torah would haye been written before I was created? Moses said: Forty years before. Adam said: Did you not see these words: Adam committed an error AND HE WAS ENTICED TO (do so). He (Moses) said: Yes. Whereupon, he (Adam) said: Do you then blame me for an act which Allah had ordained for me forty years before He created me? Allah’s Messenger said: This is how Adam came the better of Moses. (Book 033, Number 6411; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

Here is another narration from Muslim which makes the same point as the above:

“It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira and Hudhaifa that the Messenger of Allah said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, would gather people. The believers would stand till the Paradise would be brought near them. They would come to Adam and say: O our father, open for us the Paradise. He would say: What turned you out from the Paradise WAS THE SIN OF YOUR FATHER ADAM. I am not in a position to do that…” (Sahih Muslim, Book 001, Number 0380: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=001&translator=2&start=0&number=0380; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

MALIK’S MUWATTA

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu’z-Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah said, “Adam and Musa argued and Adam got the better of Musa. Musa rebuked Adam, ‘You are Adam WHO LED PEOPLE ASTRAY and brought them out of the Garden.’ Adam said to him, ‘You are Musa to whom Allah gave knowledge of everything and whom he chose above people with His message.’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Do you then censure me for a matter WHICH WAS DECREED FOR ME BEFORE I WAS CREATED?‘” (Malik’s Muwatta, Book 46, Number 46.1.1: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=46&translator=4&start=0&number=46.1.1; bold and capital emphasis ours)

ABU DAWUD

42 Model Behavior of the Prophet (Kitab Al-Sunnah)

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah as saying:

Adam and Moses held a disputation. Moses said: Adam you are our father. YOU DEPRIVED US and CAUSED US to come out from Paradise. Adam said: You are Moses Allah chose you for his speech and wrote the Torah for you with his hand. Do you blame me for doing a deed which Allah had decreed THAT I SHOULD DO forty year before he created me? So Adam got the better of Moses in argument.

(1693) Chapter: Belief In Divine Decree

‘Umar b. al-Khattab reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: Moses said:

My lord, show us Adam who caused us and himself to come out from Paradise. So Allah showed him Adam. He asked: Are you our father, Adam? Adam said to him: Yes. He said: Are you the one into whom Allah breathed of his spirit, taught you all the names, and commanded angels (to prostrate) and they prostrated to you? He replied: Yes. He asked: Then what moved you to cause us and yourself to come out from paradise? Adam asked him: And who are you? He said: Yes. He asked: Did you not find that was decreed in the book (records) of Allah before I was created? He replied: Yes. He asked: Then why do you blame me about a thing for which Divine decree had already passed before me? The Messenger of Allah said: So Adam got the better of Moses in argument.

MISHKAT AL-MASABIH

Abu Huraira reported that God’s messenger told of Adam and Moses holding a disputation in their Lord’s presence and of Adam getting the better of Moses in argument. Moses said, “You are Adam whom God created with His hand, into whom He breathed of His spirit, to whom He made the angels do obeisance, and whom He caused to dwell in his garden; then BECAUSE OF YOUR SIN caused MANKIND to come down to the earth.” Adam replied, “And you are Moses whom God chose to deliver His messages and to address, to whom He gave the tablets on which everything was explained, and whom He brought near as a confidant. How long before I was created did you find that God has written the Torah? Moses said, “Forty years.” Adam asked, “Did you find in it, ‘And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred’?” On being told that he did, he said, “Do you then blame me for doing a deed WHICH GOD HAD DECREED THAT I SHOULD DO forty years before He created me?” God’s messenger said, “So Adam got the better of Moses n the argument.” Muslim transmitted it. (Mishkat Al-Masabih English Translation With Explanatory Notes by Dr. James Robson, Volume I [Sh. Muhammad Ahsraf Publishers, Booksellers & Exporters, Lahore-Pakistan, Reprint 1990], p. 23; bold, capital and underline emphasis ours)

The foregoing should make it abundantly clear that Muhammad actually believed that Adam’s sin is the reason why mankind is not dwelling in Paradise, and why human beings are so miserable and sinful. Yet Muhammad took it a step further by claiming that it was Allah who basically forced Adam to disobey him, which is why he has Adam rebuking Moses for holding him responsible for committing a sin which he had no choice but to commit, since Allah had decreed that he would do so forty years before his creation!

This fact is not only brought out even further by the following narrations,

Khalid al-Hadhdha said:

I said to al-Hasan: Abu Sa’id, tell me about Adam. Was he created for the heaven or the earth? He said: No, for the earth. I said: It was unavoidable for him. I said: Tell me about the following verse of the Quran: ”can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah, except such as are (themselves) going to blazing fire.” He said: The devils do not lead anyone astray by their temptation EXCEPT THE ONE WHOM ALLAH HAS DESTINED TO GO TO HELL. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Model Behavior of the Prophet (Kitab Al-Sunnah): http://sunnah.com/abudawud/42/19; bold and capital emphasis ours)

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that Umm Salamah said:

“O Messenger of Allah, every year you are still suffering pain because of the poisoned meat that you ate.” He said: “Nothing that happens to me, but it was decreed for me when Adam was still at the stage of being clay.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah, The Chapters on Medicine: http://sunnah.com/urn/1275910; bold emphasis ours)

It is also confirmed by the very plain and explicit teaching of the Quran that it is Allah who deceives and misleads whomever he so desires, with none being able to guide the one that Allah is pleased to lead astray:

Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they have earned. Do you want to guide him whom Allah has made to go astray? And he whom Allah has made to go astray, you will never find for him any way (of guidance). S. 4:88 Hilali-Khan

Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little. S. 4:142 Hilali-Khan

Those who say our signs are lies – deafness, dumbness, in the dark! whom He pleases does God lead astray, and whom He pleases He places on the right way S. 6:39 Palmer

And whomsoever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam, and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his breast closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky. Thus Allah puts the wrath on those who believe not. S. 6:125 Hilali-Khan

Whomsoever Allah guides, he is the guided one, and whomsoever He sends astray, those! They are the losers. And surely, We have created many of the jinns and mankind for Hell. They have hearts wherewith they understand not, they have eyes wherewith they see not, and they have ears wherewith they hear not (the truth). They are like cattle, nay even more astray; those! They are the heedless ones. S. 7:178-179 Hilali-Khan

And if your Lord had so willed, He could surely have made mankind one Ummah [nation or community (following one religion only i.e. Islam)], but they will not cease to disagree,- Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy (the follower of truth – Islamic Monotheism) and for that did He create them. And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled (i.e. His Saying): “Surely, I shall fill Hell with jinns and men all together.” S. 11:118-119 Hilali-Khan

And We never sent a messenger save with the language of his folk, that he might make (the message) clear for them. Then Allah sendeth whom He will astray, and guideth whom He will. He is the Mighty, the Wise. S. 14:4 Pickthall

And to every people have we sent an apostle saying: – Worship God and turn away from Taghout. Some of them there were whom God guided, and there were others decreed to err. But go through the land and see what hath been the end of those who treated my apostles as liars! If thou art anxious for their guidance, know that God will not guide him whom He would lead astray, neither shall they have any helpers. S. 16:36-37 Rodwell

And thou mightest have seen the sun when it rose move away from their cave to the right, and when it set go past them on the left, and they were in the cleft thereof. That was (one) of the portents of Allah. He whom Allah guideth, he indeed is led aright, and he whom He sendeth astray, for him thou wilt not find a guiding friend. S. 18:17 Pickthall

IF We had so willed, We could certainly have brought every soul its true guidance: BUT the Word from Me will come true, “I will fill Hell with Jinns and men all together.” S. 32:13 Y. Ali

Is not Allah Sufficient for His slave? Yet they try to frighten you with those (whom they worship) besides Him! And whom Allah sends astray, for him there will be no guide. And whomsoever Allah guides, for him there will be no misleader. Is not Allah All-Mighty, Possessor of Retribution? S. 39:36-37 Hilali-Khan

This hyper-fatalistic view is quite troubling to Christians in general, including both Calvinists and Arminians, since it grossly distorts the biblical doctrine of God’s sovereignty and human responsibility, and how these two truths relate to one another.

What About Eve?

Muhammad not only acknowledged Eve’s sin, but also held her personally responsible for women betraying their husbands:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Were it not for Bani Israel, meat would not decay; and were it not FOR EVE, no woman would ever betray her husband.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 55, Number 611: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=55&translator=1&start=0&number=611)

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying: Had it not been FOR EVE, woman would have never acted unfaithfully towards her husband. (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3471: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=008&translator=2&start=0&number=3471)

Muhammad wasn’t alone since Islam’s greatest scholars and historians followed suit and also condemned Eve. This next citation regarding the fall comes from renowned Muslim historian al-Tabari, and fully agrees with the preceding traditions that Eve’s sin affected all women:

According to Yunus- Ibn Wahb- Ibn Zayd (commenting on God’s word: “And he whispered”): Satan whispered to Eve about the tree and succeeded in taking her to it; then he made it seem good to Adam. He continued. When Adam felt a need for her and called her, she said: No! unless you go there. When he went, she said again: No! unless you eat from this tree. He continued. They both ate from it, and their secret parts became apparent to them. He continued. Adam then went about in Paradise in flight. His Lord called out to him: Adam, is it from Me that you are fleeing? Adam replied: No, my Lord, but I feel shame before You. When God asked what had caused his trouble, he replied: Eve, my Lord. Whereupon God said: Now it is My obligation to make her bleed once every month, as she made this tree bleed. I ALSO MAKE HER STUPID, although I had created her intelligent (halimah), and must make her suffer pregnancy and birth with difficulty, although I made it easy for her to be pregnant and give birth. Ibn Zayd said: Were it not for the affliction that affected Eve, the women of this world would not menstruate, AND THEY WOULD BE INTELLIGENT and, when pregnant, give birth easily. (The History of Al-Tabari: General Introduction and From the Creation to the Flood, translated by Franz Rosenthal [State University of New York Press, Albany], Volume 1, pp. 280-281; bold and capital emphasis ours)

According to this reference Eve was not only made to bleed for her sin but she was also made stupid with the result being that all women now bleed and are basically stupid!

Nor is this an isolated opinion from some obscure, unknown Muslim historian since Muhammad himself taught that women were morally and intellectually deficient in comparison to men, which is why the majority of the people burning in hell are women!

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:Once Allah’s Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) on ‘Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, “O women! Give alms, as I have seen that THE MAJORITY of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women).” They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Apostle?” He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion THAN YOU. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.” The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?” He said, “Is not THE EVIDENCE OF TWO WOMEN EQUAL TO THE WITNESS OF ONE MAN?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her religion.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=6&translator=1&start=0&number=301; see also Volume 2, Book 24, Number 541)

And:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, “Isn’t the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?” The women said, “Yes.” He said, “THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE DEFICIENCY OF A WOMAN’S MIND.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 48, Number 826: http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=48&translator=1&start=0&number=826)

Unlike Islam, nowhere will one find the Holy Bible saying that women have become stupid as a result of the Fall, or that they are the majority of those who end up in hell.

With the foregoing in perspective, it is quite evident that Muhammad did not believe in “Original Forgiveness,” but rather held to the fact that Adam’s sin brought great misery and evil to humanity, since his disobedience resulted in the loss of paradise for all of mankind. And yet Muhammad took this a step further by claiming that, in reality, it is Allah who has brought such untold pain, suffering and destruction to human beings, since he was responsible for predestining and purposing that Adam would end up inevitably sinning against him, in order to bring about the expulsion of all human beings from the garden.

So much for the boldfaced lie propagated by Muhammadans that Islam teaches that “Original Sin” ended with Adam since it affirms “Original Forgiveness.”
